Meet Gus – Unedited

“Would you grab a couple of beers out of the cooler?” She gestured over to a standing cooler that was almost as tall as Gus. He opened and said, “Holy Shit! This is … WOW. You have Schofferhofer Zitrone Weizen!”

“Help yourself. I’ll take the same.”

“Oh, this is going to be fun.”

“What?”

Gus’s had his head deep in the cooler. His voice was muffled when he responded, “Exploring your beverage collection.”

Gus returned and placed the beers on the table next to each of their plates. “You’ve got beer I’ve never heard of in there.”

She nodded as she loaded the tacos with fixings.

“You don’t understand. I’m the beer guy.”

“The beer guy?” She laughed.

“I know my beers. I spent a percentage of my life dedicated to sampling and scouting out new beers for a bar in NYC. I am the beer guy.”

“I just out beered you. I guess that makes me The Beer Guy now.” She picked up her beer and raised it in the air.

Gus chuckles as he takes another bite of his taco.

“You’re more than welcome to scout and sample from my beer cooler anytime. The big ones are kept out in the garage, so if–”

“The big one? What the hell is the big one?”

“There’s a big refrigerator full of beer.” She gestured toward the garage. “I enjoy serving regional beers, and when I discover a brand I like, I have it here. I don’t know if I should tell you this or not, but I also have four taps in the house. I don’t have them stocked at the moment because I haven’t really been here enough, but they are keg ready whenever.

“I like you so much more now. I didn’t think I could, but I’ve gotta tell you, I really, really like you so much more.”

“Whatever. You can call me the beer guy, and I will decide if I like you any more after you’ve tried some of my favorites.”

Gus wiped his mouth and stared at the woman across from him. She was about to take a bite of her perfectly stuffed taco when she noticed him watching. She paused.

“Beer, and the best tacos I’ve ever had. Woman, your stock is rising by the second,” Gus joked.

“I bet you say that to all your friends who have more beer than you do.”

“Sorry, I don’t.” Gus finished his first taco and loaded a second. “Seriously, why are these so good?”

“Extra MSG.”
